Miramar College Counseling Department, Do you really take advantage of what they have to offer?

Recently my group and I meet with Miramar counselor Marc Hollman, who has been working for the counseling department for the past nine years. We asked him, "What resources are available to students from the counseling department?"  He mentioned students should know about the importance of the counseling department in offering students help with their educational plans as well as transfer program information.  The counseling department is a roadmap for success for all students throughout their college career. As well as offering the above, Mr. Hollman also stated the counseling department helps with referrals for marriage and family counseling as well as time management assistance.

The counseling office is located in C-302 and hours of operation are Monday through Thursday 8am-6pm as well as Friday 8am-12pm. The counseling department has day an evening walk-in appointments for ten to twenty minutes or you can call and schedule an appointment. There number for counseling appointments or for any questions you might have is 858-536-7840 or 619-388-7840.

We asked several students on Miramar campus what their favorite resources were that the counseling department offers, this is what the stated.

Dakota Castaneda
age 20
Majoring in Nursing
I like the counseling center because they help you pick out classes that you need to transfer.

Anthony Malevich
age 28
Majoring in Hotel Management
My favorite reason why I like the counseling department is meeting with the counselors because they help you stay on track with your academic career.

Brett Holland
Age 23
Majoring in  Child Development
I think the counselors are great because they are understanding and offer good advice.

Jameka Reied
Age 21
Majoring in Computer Science
I like the counseling department because you have someone to talk to with you with your classes.

One last key point we would like you to know about the Miramar Counseling department is that they offer extensive help and assistance to military and veteran students. Here's a link which talks about the academic counseling for students such as these.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHi1p6bfFxk

  1. Marc Hollman has really contributed to the community college. Nine years he has probably seen and helped so many students. Im sure he loves his job. The counselors office is conveniently located near the center of the school grounds. They really meet your needs and guide you on a personal achievement plan to help achieve goals. The office prefers appointments for expedited service but walkin are always welcome there are two different computers with internet that you can surf the web until they call you. I havent personally worked with Marc Hollman, but I'm sure his experience can speak for itself.

  2. For sure I know where they are located since I have been there 4-5 times this semester. First of all they are so friendly and secondly they will help you as much as they can to answer your questions regarding your major, classes and even some problems you are having with your educations. First two weeks or first month of the semester they are so busy helping all new students and some old ones with their questions and you need to make an appointment but after that you just needs to walk in and they are ready to help you out.

  3. I have a lot of experience with the counselors. They are very nice and are a great resource if you are looking to transfer to a UC. In my case, they haven't been able to help me because I want to transfer out of state. Every time I go in I get a different answer. With that being said, they still have helped me out a lot. When I first got to Miramar I was clueless when it came to what classes to take. I also love how easy it is to talk to a counselor. With all the students that attend Miramar, it's great that they take walk ins. Every student needs to see a counselor at some point. Because, they will have no idea what they are doing without their help.

  4. I think it’s great how dedicated Marc Hollman is to his job. Nine years is a long time and exhibits a lot of dedication. Being a counselor is a lot of work and requires patience. Time Management assistance is important; it gets very stressful being in school and having a full-time job. Knowing how to manage time helps open up room in the day, and relieves some stress. It’s great how the Counselors have the different programs to help students get through college. Also, it is great family counseling is offered; it helps deal with the personal issues at home in order to not interfere with focus on school.

  5. I have had numerous experiences with Miramar counseling office and I have no complaints. The counselors at Miramar have helped me in so many ways from picking classes to offering suggestions on how to further my academics. They were always patient and willing to help the best way they knew how. The counselors of Miramar are knowledgeable and understanding. I have actually had a counseling session with Mr. Marc Hollman and he answered my questions using his experience and knowledge. I have heard some counselor horror stories, but as for myself I can’t say I ever had a situation with a counselor where I was left confuse or mislead.

  7. I think it’s great how dedicated Marc Hollma is with his job and a big plus with helping people with marriage and family. This is a way telling campus and his degree that he love and enjoy what he do. All the counselor are very nice but never took the chance to get to know a little bit of their bio. Is like people say, "don't judge the book by the cover" is the same thing with people. Don't judge them by their look.

  8. Seeing your counselor is a must at Miramar college. They provide the best information on how to set up your classes and help you take the right classes for your major. They are all very nice and always there to help in any way possible. Now I don't favor any counselor because there's no need to. Every counselor is right there ready to help you. Only problem is trying to see a counselor. Dislike the fact that I have to wait a very long time just to see one. Gets me really frustrated and I sometimes end up leaving. I'm not sure if you can set up an appointment but if I could do that in the future I would. Other than that this article is great for up coming Miramar students.

  9. I think its great that the counselors at Mira mar college are able to help you chose the right classes that you will to take and they can also give you ideas on what classes you need to take and what your majoring in as well. That way to don't end up taking the wrong classes that you don't need to take. Ive been to the consulting a few times but the only thing i don't like about it is that you have to setup a appointment to go and see them and sometimes it could take a very long time so you just end up leaving.

  10. I love the counseling department at Miramar. The very first time I went and saw one of the counselor's, I was not impressed with her at all. She did nothing to help me plan out my college classes, was very rude, and wasn't helpful to me for my first year of college. After I saw her, I was scared that all the counselor's were going to be like that. But nope, once I found Erica (which is a great counselor) she was very very helpful. Helped me plan out my classes for next semester and was very understanding. I am glad I went and talked to another counselor instead of just giving up. I love my new counselor and I am glad that she is there to stick by my side and help me with planning my future!

  11. The counseling office in my opinion is great when its planning for any students future. They also discuss on assessment test, grades, and class recommendations for transfers or getting a degree on whatever majors people want. The only thing I didn't like the counseling office is the waiting period because I remember a time when a lady set a schedule during the summer and she has to wait more than 3-4 hours just to discuss with a counselor for couple minutes

  12. The counseling department is very important place because that were you plan out what classes you would like to take and you also get advices from your counselor on other classes you can take. The first time i went to a counselor in Mesa College he ask me what degree did i wanted to pursuit and he started talking to me and guiding me on what classes i could take. It show how much they care for you and they are willing to help you. After reading the article above i didn't know the counseling department could refer you to marriage or family counseling i though it was for students and classes only.I glad my classmates wrote an article about the counseling department i learn something new today.

  13. I can not believe I have yet to speak to a counselor. As a student I am planning on transferring to a UC or Cal State but I wasn't sure where to begin. With this semester ending and picking classes right around the corner the counseling office sounds like it would be a perfect match for my needs and questions. This blog is really helpful for someone like me who is still new to the school and trying to figure everything out. After reading article, because of the reviews the the counselors seem to be very useful and welcoming to any questions or concerns. Thanks for the advice on scheduling an appointment as well as giving us their phone number. Very useful blog! Thanks!

  14. The counselors really help! I had to go see one when I was undecided on a major and was just taking whatever classes to get me by until I really picked a major. They gave me a print out of all the classes I needed to take to get my degree too! I will be visiting the counseling department next semester to see if I can be able to switch my major for SDSU and nursing. The counselors are very useful and they really take their time with you to make sure you are on schedule in the academic world. Great post!

  16. I would say that the counseling department can use some work. Everytime I went it was crowded and took a long time to see someone. For the size of the campus, I think that there should be more counselors to help students plan their educational path. I can say that when I did meet with the counselors, they were very helpful and nice. I felt like I was at home just hanging out in a way. I don't know if it was because I was prior military and they always had some questions for me, or liked to hear about my experiences. Overall, every visit was a good one for me. I would recommend any student go visit to have them evaluate their career path.
