Miramar
College English Lab is a valuable resource. The lab is funded by a grant, which
is great because it shows that the college really cares to use the grant to
help the students. When going into the lab the student must first sign into a
log book and then enter a code into the computer for the electronic sign-in.
The tutorial code you see posted on the lab’s computer is TR3320131; at least
that’s what I saw when I last entered the lab, but if it is different than the
code will still be posted on the front of the computer. The lab is open to all
of our English 43 students. Although, it is not open 24/7; the English Lab is
open Mondays from 8am-12:30pm/3pm-6:15pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays it is closed,
and Wednesdays 8am-11am/3pm-6:15pm. The English Lab is helpful to anyone who
enters. Our group asked a few students how they feel about the English Lab, and
the results are below:
Junie-
major in Child Development: "I really like the English lab. The tutors
here are very helpful and understanding."
Elise-
major in Child Development: "The English lab is a great for us students to
receive tutoring in English. I think everyone taking an English class should
visit the lab at least once a week. It helps."
Alex-
major undecided: " I come to to the English Lab because the tutoring
is helpful and free."
Neko-
major in Chemistry: "The Lab offers a good service to students, like me, who
are not that good at English. I come here because I need the help and the
tutors are dedicated to helping us."
Seth-
major in Accounting: “It has been proven that English grades improve, I feel as
though I have improved as well."
The
English Lab holds a total of 20 computers that are accessible to students. The
computer is already logged on; there is no need to type in any password or
username, just click sign in. When entering the internet on the computer the
Lab’s website automatically pops up with all the important resources students
need for their assignments and other work. Miramar English Lab also has a
Facebook which is helpful because they post some updates about the Lab and
other information. On the Lab’s website under Important documents/newsletters,
a student could find out that Carme Garces started the ESOL 40 Lab. In the Lab
there are any boards, one of which is the bulletin board with information. The
information on the bulletin board are workshops that are available. Workshops
are very helpful towards extra credit. In the end, the English lab is very
important to students, and I would suggest students take advantage of it. The
16 tutors that are in the Lab are there to assist. If a student has any
questions, then they are sure to help to the best of their ability. I have personally
been in the English Lab, and I will utilize it whenever I have time outside of
work. Just check it out; who knows, a student could walk out with a future A+
paper just by spending 20 minutes in the Lab.
This article on the math lab is well done. I have been to the lab twice so far this semester and plan on going more in the future. The last time that I was in the lab the tutor in there was very outgoing and very helpful. She was working with another student but said "If you need any help at all just let me know" I also was able to use the dictionary which is just one of the many resources that I am able to obtain if need be. The english lab is really a great help to students who need it.
ReplyDeleteLabs are always useful to every student who needs help. Its one of the most popular programs we have on campus. Last semester I used to go to Math labs and English labs all the time. As of late I am unable to attend to any lab meetings because of having a full time job. Maybe next semester I will have more time to go. If they expand on making different labs for different subject then I think more students will find it extremely useful and more college students. Having labs for each subject can be hard but I really think we can pull it off.
ReplyDeleteThe lab is very helpful and I have to agree since for my past three writing assignment I spend at least one hour in there to get help on how to improve my grammar, how to manage my sentences and specially how to improve my vocabulary. I am thankful for having such a place for me and everyone whom thinks they need help to have better understanding and resolve their English problem. No matter English is your second language or your first one you always have room for improvement. I did not get chance to attend those workshop that taking place in the lab but for sure I can tell you they are useful too.
ReplyDeleteThe lab is a very useful tool for any student that needs help with english. The tutors are very nice and really want to help you succeed. The best part is that the lab is free tutoring. This is very helpful for struggling college students that cant afford tutoring. In my own experience, the math lab is a great resource when you need math help. They also have a lot of computers which is good because usually labs are full. They also have a good amount of tools at your disposal such a dictionaries and thesauruses.All in all, everyone should use this great resource to help you succeed in english class.
ReplyDeleteThe lab is a great tool and I really wish I could have been taking advantage of it more so in the semester. When i was introduced to the lab in my english 43 class I noticed that the computers are open and there were more than enough of assistances more than willing to help out. I know that the hours are great for most students. Its great to have this program installed in the Community College level where most people are developing their skills and grammar. I really hope the school continues to fund this program. The lab has the fastest internet connect the school has to offer which is a great tool for most people. I know that with my labtop I can run into problems and see the slower connection. Great article!
ReplyDeleteThe English lab is very helpful to students and very nice with helping out students who need help with their work. They are very understanding and do not judge you especially when you don't know something, I am very pleased to have an English lab to where the professor's take time out of their busy schedule and help out students in need. I really hope that more students go to the English lab so that it stays open for more semester's to come. The longer it stays open then the more students will get help with their studies, homework, etc. Prayers to keep the English lab open :)
ReplyDeleteThanks peeps, I found this very useful because this will help me improve on my English class. The first day I walk to the English lab I was a little scared. The reason being is I’m not the typical girl that asks for help. I got proven wrong, everyone in the lab are very friendly and willing to help you even students. I will start to take advantage of this opportunity that the school is applying on campus to get some extra help. After reading this blog I actually see myself more of them. Once again thank you for the information.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a resourceful place to get help with writing. I highly recommend for those who struggle in writting because these guys can help you out. Its worth an investment of improving writing skills. Next semester I am looking forward to go there and get some help on my essays and see what I need to improve or develop.
ReplyDeleteI really like the English Lab because when you need help in writing your paragraph for English 48 there always willing to help you with your grammar and vocabulary. Everyone is really nice at the Lab. I haven't attended to a English workshop yet because i work during the day and some of the workshops end at 2pm. But I hear they have a lot of information for you to learn. Throughout the semester i been taking advantage of going to the English lab to work on my paragraph for my English class. I definitely recommend every student who is having trouble with their writing to attend the English lab and they will see an improvement in themselves.
ReplyDeleteThis semester is almost over and I am very disappointed that I wasn't able to use this wonderful resource our campus has to offer other than the scavenger hunt assignment. My first impression of the lab was that it was a nice quiet more personal room. I appreciated how as soon as I walked in to do the scavenger hunt, before I even signed in I had a teacher standing there asking why I was in and what I needed help with. Very nice and grateful. I am so glad that this wonderful resource is available for me through english 49 because I am definitely going to need help there with writing my essays. Its unfortunate that it stops at 49 and doesn't carry on to any higher english classes.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to the english lab yet to get help on my assignments but I heard great and wonderful things about that place! Maybe next year I will be able to find time and go check it out. I think the only time I went to it was for english class because of the scavenger hunt. If it wasn't for that assignment I probably would of never known where the building was. I will be taking english 49 next year and you better believe I will be making time to check the english lab out. Thanks for the great post.
ReplyDeleteThe lab is very useful to every student in campus. The semester is almost over and I'm disappointed to myself that I never had the time to go to the lab. The reason been because I work full time and by the time I'm off is not open. By next semester ill be able to attend the English lab and schedule my work with the school hours. It will be more convinced for me and my education. I'm looking forward in the Nextel semester and the improvement I can develop. Once again thanks for the post and taking the time of putting the hours of the lab.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed going to the Lab the one time I did go. There were alot of computers with a very helpful staff. Every student was trying so hard to do their best which made me want to do my best. I wish I had more time to go though. I also could see that the staff was very helpful and delightful. The only problem was there wasn't enough teachers for all the students who needed their help haha. Everybody was just dieing for attention and help haha. Its good though because they were willing to wait for some good help. That's what I observed when I was there.
