The English Lab is an amazing tool that students can find located in the I-building in room I-122. You can get help with a wide variety of areas ranging from: homework, reading assignments, writing assignments, study skills and everything in between. The hours are Monday and Wednesday 8 a.m.-6:15 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 8:30 a.m. -5:45 p.m.. The lab services students in Basic Skills’ English and in ESOL. The tools that the writing lab offers are important to the students’ success and can help guide you to a better understanding of your assignments. There are twenty computers equipped with access to the fastest internet the school has to offer, Microsoft Office, along with six soundproof headphones, and five paper dictionaries. These tools alone can help improve grammar errors and improve writing structures. Now, if you want to be more involved the teacher assistants are more than willing to answer your questions without ridicule and they will not make you feel embarrassed at all. It’s important to get involved so that you can sharpen your skills. Former and current writing lab students around Miramar College were asked "What do you like the most about the English Lab?"
1. Quantashia Cotto, 20, Child Development
"What I like about English Lab is that they're always available for help and they're not judgmental"
2. Mikee Baldonado, 21, Physical Therapy
"It/They help/s me to improve my grammar mistakes"
3. Lance Vigilia, 20, Kinesiology Emphasis in Physical Therapy
"I like the assistance that the English Lab provides."
4.Patrick Williams 23, Radiology
"Well, it can help me for my mistakes and errors I have made and it's great because it was a key to success in college English level and lifelong learning"
These four students had a positive outlook on the writing lab and they seem extremely happy that Miramar College has the appropriate funding for the lights to stay on. Actually, the funding for this program comes in the form of a Grant. In fact the only way that you can use the tools and the help from the teacher aids is if you sign in. This registration is crucially important; you have to allow the Miramar writing lab to keep track of your attendance in order for them to get financially supported. Any student in the San Diego Community District enrolled in Basic Skills English and ESOL is able to come to this writing lab with a valid student-Identification Card. One student teacher has publicly come on record to say, “Going to the Writing lab will drastically help your grades and help fix problems that you may have and help improve upon the foundation of your writing skills.” There is such a high success rate of improving your grade by just having the student teachers look over the material before you turn it in. Some aids are currently finishing up their masters and have great knowledge and understanding. They are there to watch you succeed. In this case if you don’t use it you lose it, financially speaking. Please help set yourself up for success and use the writing lab!

ReplyDeleteI have been to the English Lab once so far this semester, and I love it. It is very quite and a great place to help you study if you get distracted easily. The assistants/teachers in there are very easygoing and very helpful. Right when I walked through the door an assistant came up to me and asked if I needed any help. Two thumbs up the assistant's/teachers in the English Lab :)
ReplyDeleteIf you want to know more about the English Lab go to this website https://sites.google.com/site/miramarbasicskillslab/ and it will definitely help you out if you are wondering exactly what the English Lab is all about. On that website they have important documents/newsletters, office hours, their own personal blogs, help with reading/writing, and the great thing is there is no appointment needed! They also have a Facebook page that you can go on to and look at different posts about anything. That website for Facebook is https://www.facebook.com/MiramarBasicSkillsLab. So go and check out the Facebook page, the actual English Lab page, and go into the lab to get more additional help in English! Hope to see some of you there soon or in the future :)
The English lab must be a great place to get help with English homework that you have from other English classes I've been in there once so I found out it was a great place to get help if you have to study for a test or if you just need help with the homework the Tutors can help you and give you the support you need to pass your English test if you have one for an upcoming English class
DeleteThis article sounds great. There is so much interesting detail that was put into it. The English Lab sounds very helpful, and it looks very helpful; when walking in you get help right away. Everyone is very nice there. If I have any time from work in the future, I will surely get help here, but unfortunately I’m stuck at work from early am to late pm before class starts. My boss lets me off like 30 minutes early sometimes, and I use that time to review work in my English Class or Math Class. I only wish the English Lab would extend their hours.

Thank you! :) We my group really did our best for this article! And as the interviewer I really can see that the students that taking the English Classes really appreciate and they really loved that we have the English Lab to help us in our home works or writing assignments.
Deletewhy wouldn't you use this great resource. Its a great way to improve your skills. I am glad to know that help is there for me when ever i need it.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good resource for those who needs additional help in writing. I personally think that with this service in campus it would give students the advantage to edit and learn what and how a written paper or report should be. I would highly recommend for those who struggle in writing the most. Who knows if it's going to benefit others or not. I think it is great that they make this service available to students to show they care for your education. I'm looking forward to come and to have them edit my rough draft one day and maybe learn a thing or two.
ReplyDeleteI am in there at least two or three times a week. The Assistance/Teachers are very friendly. They are a big help for my both English 42 and 43 classes. It is true you can learn out of class too but when you are having a difficulty you can count on their help right away just by raising your hand. With a big smile they will come to you and help you out with your grammar, vocabulary and even they will refer you to some website that can help you to do better and learn more. “Quizlet.com” is one of the website that you can improve your vocabulary in there. I also add http://miramarbasicskillslab.blogspot.com/ to my bookmark so I can access to those sites even when the lab is close.
ReplyDeleteI went in to the English Lab for my first time when I was completing the scavenger hunt for Professor Forbes English Review. I wasn't greeted by any of the teacher assistants because they were all currently busy with other students. So when I needed some help with somethings in the English lab, another student, who was also in the same class as I am, and has also completed the scavenger hunt, was sitting in the back row of computers. So when I needed help, and all of the teacher assistants were still occupied with the other students, I simply just asked her for help, and I felt that as much as the teacher assistants would be happy to help me she as well was very happy to help me with anything that I needed help in. From this experience, I figured out that when you go into the English lab, not only are the teacher assistants there willing to help you, but also the other students in the English lab, (make sure that they are there on their own time¬ school time) are will to help you with stuff that you need help with.

ReplyDeleteWhen i first started college i was unaware about the English lab. This is a great tool to use for students in need of help. People should take the time to look into this and take advantage of this opportunity. It will help students grow in academic's. One of the best parts of using the English lab is having the chance to use one of there computers. Since going there I have improved greatly on my English studies. I have grown as a English student and this tool has continued to help other students as well. I recommend this to any struggling student out there. You wont be disappointed.

ReplyDeleteThis is a great blog post! I found this very useful because I am going to do the same post late in April. Its nice to get peoples different opinions it also shows how much work you put into the blog and this is good to know so that way I don't write the same things when I do my blog post.
ReplyDeleteI like how you used the four different peoples opinions about the lab. That shows that your researcher went out to find people and see what they thought. This is good, it kind of reminds me of a reference. I think you did a very good job!
Dude! The english lab is awesome! I've been hearing some awesome things about the english lab and I am definitely going to start trying to use it to my advantage more! I should of been using it since the beginning of the semester but hey, we live and learn! Thank you guys so much for doing a blog post about this place, I hope more people learn that it is a GREAT tool and it will really help you to improve your writing skills and will help review your papers before they are due and your grade will be better from using it!
ReplyDeleteI had a great experience in the English Lab. When I walk in the room for the first time I was greeted by Ashley and she explain to me step by step how to sign in and sign out. That showed me the lab assistants really care for the students from the very first step a student steps inside the lab. I was looking around the room and saw a lot of posters with helpful tips for English grammar, paragraph writing and positive messages.Once I sat down I started doing my scavenger hunt and a few of the aids approach me and asked me if I need any help. That made me feel that I can count on the lab assistant to help me with my paragraph writing and also grammar. Everyone was really friendly and outgoing.
ReplyDeleteWhen I walked away from the room I said to myself I am definitely coming back to this room for some help. I am glad we have an English lab on campus.
Thanks, for the helpful resource your providing our classmates and fellow students. I, myself have attended the writting lab. I can agree that when I first walked in to the lab I was pretty scared because I did not know what to expect or have people laugh at me, but to my suprise the aids and professors that where there to help me out where nothing but polite and eager to help me out with my work. The helpers were familiar with my assaignments and made the understanding part much easier. From my prior experience from the wonderful help I am definetly going back for more help and I would reccomend this resource to my fellow English 43 classmates any person that is enrolled to any english 43 course.
ReplyDeleteThanks peeps, I found this very useful because this will help me improve on my English class. The first day I walk to the English lab I was a little scared. The reason being is I’m not the typical girl that asks for help. I got proven wrong, everyone in the lab are very friendly and willing to help you even students. I will start to take advantage of this opportunity that the school is applying on campus to get some extra help. After reading this blog I actually see myself more of them. Once again thank you for the information.
ReplyDeleteKnowing that the English lab is there to help me is great! having access to computers and tutors allows me to improve every assignment and have it be reviewed by a tutor. The English lab is a great resource for a student like me that is trying to improve his writing skills and often needs help with homework assigments.I have only visited the lab once so far this semester but I'm planning on making more time to attend the lab at least a few times a week. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteThe first and unfortunetly only time I have been to the english lab so far this semester was for the scavenger hunt. I plan on using it alot more in the future however because I already find it to be extremely helpful. After reading this post and all of the insuing comments I now even more than I did before. I agree with people who commented on how helpful the assistants are. When I was in there they were extremely helpful and friendly. I know that before my next at home writing assignment I will definetly be going in there for some help.
ReplyDeleteThis article is well written and informative. Everything mentioned in this article is true, I have used the English Lab once or twice so I can vouch for the info given. This article provides great information a student would need to know about the English lab. The tutors are dedicated to helping the student achieve greatness. There is no reason why any student would not take advantage of this opportunity. The lab is free and it helps you write better paragraphs and essays. Thanks to this article now students know that there is help here on campus and can take advantage of this. Unless you’re English 101 then you would have to take your ass somewhere else. Sorry it’s the rules.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog! There is no reason to not go to the english lab. We all should feel very grateful to have such a wonderful resource located on campus that is available for student use 4 days a week. Unfortunately, I myself has only been to the lab once and that was for the scavenger hunt. But while I was in there I found it very comforting and not intimidating at all. Every professor/ assistant are very welcoming and they have an answer for about any question you may have for them. I find it very nice that we are able to use this resource all the way up until English 101. I plan on coming to the english lab more often, especially for tips and advice on any future essay's/ assignments.
ReplyDeleteSo far this semester, I have gone to the ESOL lab only once. Although I only went to complete the scavenger hunt, I found it very useful and helpful. While I was there, I was greeted right away and asked if I needed help signing in. I was then asked, after i was seated, if I needed help with any work or just studying. While working in the lab, I spent some time looking around the room and realized how many things were available to me. I found the tutors most helpful. I will definitely try to attend the ESOL lab again, for either help, studying, or even some of the workshops!
ReplyDeleteWell I can honestly say that all this semester I tried my hardest to go to the ESOL lab but was only able to do so for the scavenger hunt. I regret not taking advantage of this valuable resource on campus. The time I did went was when professor forbes was there helping students editing their papers. As far as I could see she was very attentive and helpful. The staff seemed very dedicated to the students and eager to help them. There was alot of posters on the wall and very colorful, cheerful room. If I am ever afforded another chance to go, I would definitely go and recommend this place to any of my buddies.
